Why should Indonesians study English?

There are many reasons why Indonesians decide to study English. Andrew Maile, a teacher at Aim for English in Manggarai, Jakarta, looks at a few of them; Firstly, students hoping to continue their studies overseas in an English-speaking country need to have a very good level of English in order to be accepted at overseas universities. A good qualification from a prestigious overseas university is often regarded as imperative in securing sought-after jobs when one returns home. In this era of globalization, businesspeople increasingly requre a good level of English in order to communicate with colleagues in overseas branches, parent companies, customers, suppliers and others they may come into contact with on a daily basis. Finally, for those who simply want to travel to or meet people from foreign countries English has become the world's 'International language' If people wish to communicate with the world beyond Indonesia, English really is a must.
