A day in the life of an English language school

Mornings tend to be the quietest time at English language schools in Jakarta. It's the time that teachers can prepare their materials for the classes ahead and the administrative staff have a chance to get organised for the day before the deluge of students begins. At Aim for English in Manggarai, for example, the first classes of the day tend to be groups of housewives who come to improve their social English and to practice their conversational English with their friends before heading off for an afternoon's hard shopping at one of Jakarta's ritzy malls. Later in the afternoon it is the turn of high school and university students to fill the classrooms and focus on academic English and IELTS preparation, especially for those students who plan to continue their studies overseas before making way for the office workers and business professionals who make up the bulk of Aim for English's evening classes. The last classes generally finish around 9pm. It's been a long day!
